We wanted to do something a bit complex and were glad when they were OK with it. We also have ten pages inside, alongside people we admire deeply, like Harukawa Namio, Stu Mead and Mrzyk & Moriceau and people we despise, like Pierre Woodman. This cover is designed to elicit strong responses. We were very worried that nobody would write and tell us what they thought of this cover. I can assure you that we have no desire nor design to bring back racial stereotypes or, as you say, "make "niggers, coons and gollywogs" cool". I'm black, nothing worse could happen to me. And Lola is white, in love with a black man, nothing worse could happen to her. We wanted to find a way to make people see that some images that we find perfectly benign are just the same old stereotypes wrapped in new clothes. Hence the juxtaposition of pickanniny imagery and anonymous (decapitated) black female ass. That's why in our interview, when asked to explain our cover, we say: "If it makes you laugh, ask yourself why." We wanted to insert a small scandal among all the paradisiac, hedonistic covers magazines tend to churn out for their summer issues. Working in design, as we do, we're supposed to be purveyors of "cool", a task we do not like very much. As much as we can, we try to move away from "cool images" and into more difficult concepts. Tell us: do you think we've failed? Do you believe people will just find this cover "cool"? Your message seems to prove the contrary but do tell us what you think.
